What are renters looking for in 2022?

According to our 2022 Spring Survey, more than a fifth of Rightmove’s audience plan on renting a property within the next 12 months. Here’s what stage they’re at in the process of moving.

 

How renters search for a new home

Of renters who have started looking for properties on Rightmove in the last month, only 29% need to move within a month. 51% need to move in 2-3 months and another 20% in over 4 months time. On average, a tenant will start looking on Rightmove 3 months before they need to move.

The vast majority of renters (77%) are considering more than one area for their next home. Over half (53%) said they were looking at three or more different areas.

Awareness and appeal of Built For Renters

Of 25-44 year olds planning to rent in next 12 months, 20% are aware of Built For Renters as a concept.

However, 39% think that Built For Renters properties sound appealing.

 

Communicating with renters

We asked renters how they would prefer to hear about new rental properties and developments.

59% of those planning to rent within the next 12 months said Rightmove was their preference to hear about new rental properties. While 31% said they preferred to hear about new properties via email.

Among 25-44 year olds planning to rent in next 12 months, the clear preference was Rightmove (60%) with email (30%) again second. Just 1% said they preferred receiving property updates via Facebook, while Instagram and printed media both had a 0% share.
